The Town of Warrenton is working to update its Zoning Ordinance Article 6 – Signage to ensure compliance with the Supreme Court ruling, Reed v. Town of Gilbert, Arizona that requires a “content neutral” approach.
To help with this effort, the Planning Commission held a work session with the International Sign Association (ISA) and created a sub-committee to review sign ordinances. From there, the Town hired a nationally recognized sign consultant that had produced documents for the ISA to lead the update.
In February of 2017 the Town Council appointed a Steering Group to provide input. The consultant team spent three days in Warrenton meeting with stakeholders from the businesses, residents, and Town officials. This input resulted in a draft ordinance that proceeded to external legal council to ensure it is compliant with the U.S. Supreme court ruling and a second round of review and input from businesses, residents, and Town Officials for the consultant to consider in the next draft.
